Tha Carter IV looks like Tha Carter III.2

Courtesy of HipHopMusicDotCom.com

This photo is whack...it was cool for Tha Carter III but don't recycle concepts, evolve.  If anything the cover should resemble his bout with prison, becoming a mogul as the mastermind behind with the other two hottest hip-hop artists in the game and on his label (Nicki and Drake), as well as the expansion of his label to include the likes of DJ Khaled and T-Pain making Young Money a powerhouse hip-hop label, not to mention how he is evolving as an artist and elevating the entire game.

A couple suggestions:1) black and white photo showing the profile of Wayne looking over a skyline, waiting for his YM helicopter to land on his rooftop helipad; 2) lil wayne painted in graffiti amidst a graffiti-covered wall shot in black light surrounded by a black border; 3) a lineup of 4 usual suspects all different versions of lil wayne through the ages; 4) a psychedelic portrait of lil wayne.

Any one of these would have been better than the one above.

  1. Don't Judge.... Lest ye be judged....;-D

I think this multimillion dollar Hip-Hop team kind of know what they are doing...

    Why don't you??

Getting creative just for the sake of being "different" ...is an ego problem.
    (perhaps)

  2. It's common sense in the branding world...when you have a collection of work that comes out in volumes you either pick a theme and stick with it or you evolve with each new addition.

Tha Carter collection has switched and evolved in its design each time. Therefore, to recycle a design as they have done with this, is to break with convention. Jay-Z has two examples of what I am talking about with his Lifetime collection and The Blueprint collection.

The Lifetime collection, which consists of In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life, and Vol. 3 The Life and Times of S. Carter, he sticks with a basic picture of himself and it shows a gradual change in stature each time. The Blueprint trilogy however, doesn't have a common theme as it changes with each installment starting with an outside looking in, blue shot of Jay and ending with a white and red design of instruments.

People expect new and improved if that's what they have been getting all along. Likewise they expect consistency in approach if that's what they are used to. Apple doesn't deviate from its branding strategy. It maintains simplicity in its luxury and creativity. I would follow their strategy above Young Money as a true global brand. They have sold tens of millions of each of their units to date and worth over $300 billion. Wayne has only sold 5 million units to date and Baby is only worth $100 million.

By comparison, who does better branding?

    That's all I'm saying.
